OLGA. A talented teenage Ukrainian gymnast exiled in Switzerland dreams of Olympic gold in Elie Grappe’s multi-award-winning drama set in 2014. Fifteen-year-old Olga is trying to fit in with her new team in her new home, but as she prepares for the European Championships, the Ukrainian people rise up in what has become known as the Maidan Revolution. Olga is left a powerless, distant bystander as her mother, an investigative journalist, faces danger as she challenges the brutal Yanukovich regime. Former Ukrainian national team gymnast Anastasiia Budiashkina in a star-making role. Anastasia Budiashkina, who plays the part of Olga in the film, recently migrated to Poland for safety.

This historic context provides rich insight into what is happening today, and it all takes place from the point of view of a young woman abroad yearning to go back home to her mother and her people. Can Olga reconcile her personal goals as a gymnast with the history unfolding in her homeland?

"Olga remains a defiant film. Defiant in its politics, defiant in its tenderness and humanity, and defiantly hopeful for the future. It is a film, quite literally, for this very moment."

Broken Wings & Nest 38

Broken Wings, the evening's feature documentary, tells the story of Adonis, an "ugly one-winged black vulture" and Jayne Lakhani, the woman who loves him. Crippled as a fledgling by an accident which prevents his flight, Adonis survives and miraculously maintains his independent lifestyle in the wild thanks to Ms. Lakhani's extraordinary care. And the bond these two develop is truly something to see-funny, touching and surprisingly complex as challenges arise for the bird's long-term well-being.

Nest 38, filmed on location in New Zealand, is a short documentary directed by Tegan Good, examines the efforts of Ailsa McGillvary-Howard as she plays mother hen to a nest of endangered Banded Dotterels. Preyed upon by cats, dogs, and humans on ATVs, the small seabirds, with the help of Ms. Howard, defy the odds to make their stand on the rocky beach which is now protected by local authorities.

Following the screenings, Founder and President of the Southern Ocean Birding Group, and author of New Jersey Birds and Beyond led a discussion and answered questions. Thank you to our screening sponsors: Ocean County Cultural and Heritage Commission, Reclaim the Bay, and Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts and Sciences.
